Active Investment, Research & Engagement

Adding value through ESG analysis and engagement, which feeds directly into the investment process.

Henderson's dedicated research team takes an active role in researching and reviewing company activities and performance. Stocks that are identified as investable for the funds are kept under constant review by the SRI team and are subject to a thorough formal review at least once every three years.

We engage directly with companies as well as stakeholders including other investors, NGOs, policy makers, academics and regulators.

We identify companies to engage with through:

  • Ongoing processes of company analysis highlighting areas in need of improvement for particular companies e.g. CR disclosure
  • The identification of important sustainability issues e.g. climate change or human rights
  • The implementation of the corporate governance policy that applies to all Henderson’s funds
  • The continual process of monitoring third party commentary of companies as well as investigating allegations of poor practices

We monitor and document our engagement with companies which enables us to assess, on an ongoing basis, the effectiveness of our efforts. In turn, this may influence future engagement priorities, as well as ultimately, our view on the suitability of the company for SRI investment.

Ultimately if a company fails to respond adequately, we will either vote against the management at the company's AGM or divest.

Strategic engagement

In addition to company engagement, we are also actively involved in tackling issues and sectors of particular interest to our clients. Such strategic dialogue with governments, regulators and NGOs for instance, helps inform on our SRI strategy and investment approach.

We share our thinking and promote SRI in a number of ways, such as through hosting, participating and or speaking at events (eg conferences and seminars). We also make public our thinking and views through reports, newsletters, disclosing our submissions and writing press articles.
