Wall Street stocks repeated the pattern of the previous session swinging between gains and losses but managed small gains for the third day in a row (Dow Jones flat, S&P 500 +0.2%, Nasdaq +0.4%). At the time of writing the FTSE Eurofirst 300 index had shed 0.5% while the FTSE 100 was down 0.4%.

The Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee’s claim that today’s decision to expand the gilt purchase programme by a further £50 billion was necessary to prevent CPI inflation from falling below target is disputed by Henderson’s chief economist Simon Ward. Ward believes that the Bank has, once again, overestimated disinflationary forces and expects the headline CPI rate to remain above 2% throughout 2012 and move higher again in 2013.
